Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS):

Electronic article surveillance, or EAS, is an anti-shoplifting system used by retail businesses. It involves attaching an electronically-detectable tag or label to the item of clothing or merchandise. Some Retailers have these tags or labels incorporated into the packaging. In other cases, the tags or labels have to be attached by the store.

When the item is purchased, the tag is either removed or deactivated. Tags are typically removed from clothing or hard goods, while merchandise with labels incorporated into packaging are usually passed over an electronic pad that deactivates the label. The detectors are located at the store exits. If one of the active tags or labels passes through the detectors, an alarm goes off.
